YAM Gallery es un proyecto de promoción y exhibición de arte contemporáneo basado en la ciudad de San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato, México. Fundada y dirigida por Adolfo Caballero (Chile) y Marie Moébius (Francia), la galería abre sus puertas en 2010. Ubicada en el edificio histórico del Instituto Allende, la galería se despliega sobre un espacio de 200m2, repartidos en 4 salas.
La galería promueve el trabajo de 15 artistas nacionales e internacionales que ofrecen una mirada sobre la creación actual a través de diferentes medios: fotografía, pintura, escultura, instalación, dibujo, video y gráfica. YAM Gallery organiza exposiciones individuales y colectivas de artistas nacidos entre finales de los 60’s y finales de los 80’s y ofrece así un programa internacional que acciona relaciones y proyectos culturales desde la provincia.
Convencida que la creación artística se nutre de encuentros y alteridades, YAM Gallery promueve la movilidad de sus artistas e impulsa la creación gracias a un programa de residencias artísticas por invitación. Este programa ha contado con el apoyo de gobiernos, galerías privadas, museos e instituciones internacionales, permitiendo la estancia de artistas en diferentes países. Es así como el artista Canadiense Adam Chamandy recibió en 2018 el soporte del Consejo de la Ciudad de Bruselas para realizar una estadía creativa de 6 semanas en Bélgica. El mismo año, un intercambio con la galería privada Harlan Levy Projects de Bruselas permitió a la artista Francesa Amélie Bouvier realizar una residencia de creación en YAM Gallery, recibiendo el apoyo del Ministerio Mexicano de Relaciones Exteriores. Destaca también la colaboración con el Museo Universitario de Guadalajara (MUSA) y la Fundación Building Bridges para financiar la estancia y producción de dos exhibiciones individuales en México del artista chileno Norton Maza en 2017. Asimismo, en 2017, YAM Gallery coordinó y cofinanció la producción de la etapa Mexicana del proyecto fotográfico Cimarrón del aclamado artista francés Charles Fréger.
La estrategia internacional de la galería se aceleró entre los años 2011 a 2014 tras la asociación con la Galerie Talmart de París, esta mancuerna permitió establecer diálogos entre artistas árabes, asiáticos y latinoamericanos gracias a la organización de exposiciones conjuntas. La Galerie Talmart fue nominada galería de referencia para la 56 Bienal de Venecia en 2015 “All The World’s Futures” curada por Okwui Enwesor, dentro de la cual participó el artista argelino Massinissa Selmani (mención honorífica) quién también formó parte de la representación de artistas de YAM Gallery y fue becario en 2014 del programa de residencias organizado por YAM y Talmart en México.
El año de su creación, YAM Gallery inauguró su programa de participación en ferias internacionales con su presentación en la feria Ch.Aco (Santiago de Chile, 2010). YAM Gallery ha participado también en Houston Fine Art Fair, Chic Dessin Paris, DDessin Paris, ArtLima, Gallery Weekend CDMX y Pinta Miami.
Desde 2015 a la fecha la galería participa en Zona Maco. Los artistas representados por YAM Gallery fueron finalistas en los premios de adquisición en las ediciones de 2018 y 2019 de esta misma feria.
The mission of the YAM Gallery is to promote and to make contemporary art accessible to a vast public. The Yam Gallery is located in San Miguel de Allende, in the Mexican state of Guanajuato. It opened its doors in 2010 under the artistic direction of its founding members, Adolfo Caballero from Chile, and Marie Moébius from France. The YAM Gallery operates inside the historic Instituto Allende where it occupies a 200m2 space divided among four exhibition rooms.
YAM Gallery champions the artistic output of 15 artists working in various media: photography, painting, sculpture, art installation, drawing, video and other assorted graphic arts. Born during the two decades spanning the late 1960s to the late 1980s, these artists, who are native of Mexico, Chile, Argentina, France and Canada, are at the forefront of new artistic forms to challenge and reinvigorate esthetic precepts with the aim of reinterpreting the artistic narratives at work in our societies.
We at YAM strongly believe that the artistic creation nourishes itself at the confluence of encounters and alterities. This is why we nurture and encourage our artists to experience the world at large through a selective Artist-In-Residence program. Such a program was made possible with the financial support of government agencies, private art galleries as well as museums and international institutions. In 2018, Canadian artist Adam Chamandy, for example, became the recipient of a grant given by the city of Brussels, Belgium, for a 6-week residency program. That same year, an exchange between a private gallery, -Harlan Levey Projets de Bruxelles,- and the YAM Gallery made it possible for French artist Amélie Bouvier to obtain an artistic residency in San Miguel de Allende with the support of the Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs. We can also highlight the narrow collaboration between the Museum of the University of Guadalajara (MUSA) and the Building Bridges Foundation which resulted in sustaining all the residency needs of Chilean artist Norton Maza and which, additionally, facilitated two solo shows of his works in Mexico in 2017. Furthermore, also in 2017, the YAM Gallery coordinated and co-financed the production of the Mexican segment of the photographic project Cimarrón by famed French photographer Charles Fréger.
The international strategy of our gallery solidified between 2011 and 2014 when we partnered with the Galerie Talmart in Paris, France. This partnership opened up a series of exchanges between Arabic, Asian and Latinamerican artists thanks to the coordination of exhibitions in tandem. La Galerie Talmart was named a Reference Gallery during the 56th Venice Biennale in 2015. There, Algerian artist Massinissa Selmani participated in “All the World’s Futures” under the curatorial leadership of Okwui Ensewor where he was awarded an honorary mention. Massinissa Selmani is represented by YAM and, in 2014, was the recipient of a grant for the residency program in Mexico organized jointly by YAM and La Galerie Talmart.
The same year the YAM Gallery opened its doors was also the year YAM began its participation in international art fairs. Yam Gallery made its first participation at the Ch.Aco fair in 2010 in Santiago de Chile. Since then, the YAM Gallery has participated in the Houston Fine Art Fair, Chic Dessin Paris, DDessin Paris, ArtLima, Gallery Weekend CDMX and Pinta Miami. Starting in 2015, the YAM Gallery has been a steady presence in Zona Maco, reinforcing YAM’s mission and success among Mexican galleries. Artists championed by YAM were Zona Maco’s finalists for the Acquisition Prize in 2018 and in 2019.
